Define the Minimum Viable Camper
List the systems you truly need for the first version of the van. A simple bed, ventilation, basic 12V power and portable water can be a functional camper. A shower, large inverter, induction cooking, hot water and large battery bank add cost, weight and installation complexity.
Prototype the Layout
Use cardboard, painter’s tape or temporary boxes to mock up the bed, galley, refrigerator, toilet and walkway. Sit, stand and move through the space. A layout that looks perfect on a screen may feel cramped once cabinet depth and wall thickness are included.
Create a System Map Before Building
Mark where the batteries, electrical distribution, water tank, pump, heater, solar cable entry, vents and service panels will live. Reserve cable and pipe routes before insulation and wall panels close the cavities.
Buy Components in Dependency Order
Some parts determine the dimensions of everything around them. Roof fans, windows, tanks, batteries, refrigerator, toilet and heater should be confirmed before custom cabinetry is finalized. Decorative finishes can wait.
Test in Stages
Test roof openings for water intrusion, plumbing for leaks, 12V circuits for correct protection and charging systems for expected operation before final trim is installed. A staged test process is much easier than diagnosing a hidden problem after the build looks finished.
Know When DIY Should Stop
Vehicle structure, high-current DC systems, 120V AC, propane/LPG and other safety-critical systems can exceed a beginner’s experience. DIY does not mean refusing professional help; it means knowing enough to plan intelligently and hire expertise where it matters.
